‘The Walking Dead’: How the Hilltop Colony changes everything

The Greene Farm, The CDC, Woodbury, the prison, Terminus, Alexandria-Safe Zone… we’ve been to quite a few locales during the past six seasons of “The Walking Dead” – but now, we’re starting to see the bigger picture. That means there must be several pockets of civilization attempting to rebuild, to which Jesus replies that their whole world is about to get a whole lot bigger. “He sizes people up”, Payne told Variety of why it shouldn’t come as a surprise when it turns out that his character was indeed just pretending all along.

It’s here we meet Gregory. Another member, Ethan, will admit that Negan captured his brother and that the only way to get him back is to stab Gregory. It’s hard not to shudder thinking about it. Way to keep it in the family, guys. She’s been struggling at the edges for a while, but all that time spent with Deanna has made her the face of the Alexandrians in a way that Rick just can’t be. I’m happy to help, but we can’t just give things away for free. What did you think he’d do? “I could tell you, I could make it worth your while”, he tells her. Making the move on a pregnant woman whose husband is downstairs? They watch each other’s backs as zombies jump out at them. But predictions have been running rampant that Daryl Dixon will be the one to die, especially since he already had a run in with Negan’s men. Ethan was asked to deliver a message to Gregory – a blade in his gut!

By the end of “Knots Untie”, it feels as if only Rick’s motley group of survivors has moved closer to a better tomorrow. The people who survived the wreck are from the Hilltop, including the community’s doctor. Their excursion into the bedroom was rudely interrupted by an escaped Jesus who exclaimed, “I think we got off on the wrong foot”. The entire group exits their now trapped automobile and heads toward Jesus’ home fort. For the TV show, this is the transition from survival to rebuilding. They even have chickens, cows, crops, and an outdoor pizza oven – it’s the artisanal apocalypse, a “living history museum” that everyone flocked to because they had the foresight to know they wouldn’t need modern conveniences where there’s an outdoor pizza oven. Maggie demands half of their supplies and an ultrasound. The deal is ongoing. Maggie talks to Gregory again, this time with leverage.

“We’ve handled people like Negan, they’re dead”, she says, clearly referencing the man who killed her father, The Governor.

In the comics, Gregory is eventually killed for the attempted murder of Maggie.

“Half of what you have”.

Now that Jesus has arrived and Rick knows about the Saviors, a storm is coming. “You’re talking about rewriting the world here”, he says, before they all load into the RV. The episode begins with a discussion of Maggie and Glenn’s (Steven Yeun) future “pup”, with Abraham wondering to Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) if it’s right for the couple to bring a child into this world “because of the way things go”. In the comics, he’s absolutely brutal – and it sounds like it’s the same situation here, too. These two seem to get along well. We can’t wait to see where this goes! They are definitely scary, but not for everyone apparently. He’s sharing a tender moment with Rosita, who passes him a physical token of her appreciation. Rosita gives him a necklace with a piece of the tail light from the truck they came in. The others soon follow and then it isn’t a fight for survival anymore, it’s a fight for a better tomorrow. But you might even see him next episode. I think was a reference to double-bagging. Later, after Ethan almost strangles him to death, a odd mix of ecstasy and resignation hangs on Abraham’s face.

No, last week’s hookup wasn’t just a one time thang. Rick tells a comatose Carl how he knows that they can rebuild, and that he wants to show Carl.

Everyone else learns of this new coupling this week too, as the two are shown sharing some serious PDA in front of their friends, holding hands and sharing sweet glances. Stuff that makes the rest of us cringe.
