Slogans in favour of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru were raised yesterday at a rally brought out by Jadavpur University students to express solidarity with their JNU counterparts who are agitating against the arrest of their leader Kanhaiya Kumar for alleged sedition.

On Wednesday, pro-Afzal slogans were heard on the campus during a torch rally to condemn the arrest of JNU student union president Kanhaiya Kumar. “I have received a letter from the Chancellor of the university about the incident. That rally was not officially convened by the students’ union”. “It is not in Jadhavpur’s tradition to file FIRs against the students”.

Posters calling for “azadi” for Kashmir, Manipur and Nagaland were put up at the Jadavpur University were torn by the ABVP activists, who allegedly vandalised the university complex yesterday evening. “Our students told me that they did not shout any anti-national slogan that day”. Pamphlets expanding on the “Azaadi” slogans that the students were accused of chanting, were distributed.

“The university has been taken over by anti-national elements who must not be spared because they may have support from some foreign terror groups”, he said.

Meanwhile, BJP has strongly condemned the incident of Jadavpur University. “They have told me”, Das told the media here.

The protestors were waving the tricolour as well as party flags, and posters labelling the Leftists as “desh drohi” (traitors), slogans of “Make our campuses free of desh drohi Leftist student unions” and “Jis ghar se Afzal niklega, us ghar mein ghus ke marengey” echoed through the area. “On Monday, we will hold an executive council meeting and then prepare a report”, he said.
