Cases have also been registered against CPI MP D Raja, JDU MP KC Tyagi, Congress leaders Ajay Maken and Anand Sharma and, along with Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar and Student Leader Umar Khalid.

“The manner in which the sedition clause is being used in this case underlines the necessity to scrap the sedition clause 124A in the Indian Penal Code”, the Communist Party of India-Marxist said. “We have booked a case under IPC section 124, 124A (sedition)”, said inspector S. Lingaiah.

According to Cyberabad police officials, it was compulsory to book the case since it was referred by the court.

Amid the row over JNU hosting a commemorative function for Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, new posters have appeared on the varsity campus terming India as a “jail of different nationalities” and supporting Kashmir’s right to self-determination.

The posters also condemn the death of Hyderabad Central University Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula.

Rahul Gandhi had visited JNU campus on February 14 and accused the NDA government of suppressing students’ voice. Kanhaiya was arrested on the sedition charges for allegedly raising anti-national slogans on the university campus.

“We had given a call to hold protest against the handling of these incidents by the Centre from February 27 (Chandrashekhar Azad death anniversary) to March 23 (Bhagat Singh death anniversary) and we will hold stirs in different capitals during this period. The day we will turn anti-nationals, there will be no nationalist in the country”. “It demands withdrawal of the case against the leaders and all others named in the FIR”, the party said in a statement. He was arrested and charged with sedition. “Secondly, we need proof against Oppos-ition leaders”, said a senior police official.
