The counsel further said that there was no connection between Mr Kumar and the other two students arrested in the case as they belong to different student wings.

The jail authorities produced Kumar in the court following a production warrant issued on the plea of Delhi Police, which said the statements of JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya regarding the controversial university event did not match with those made by Kumar during his interrogation.

The Delhi High court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing on Kanhaiya’s bail plea till 29th February.

As Kanhaiya was arrested on February 12, Delhi Police has the statutory right to seek remand before the expiry of the 14-day period, police said. According to sources, the students told the police that the event was held without permission and pro-separatists slogans may have been raised at the gathering.

Both the students have been arrested with sedition charges after they surrendered to Delhi Police on the night of February 23.

Metropolitan Magistrate Lovleen rejected the pleas of police which wanted the voice samples for forensic test in relation to the ongoing investigation into the alleged anti-national slogan shouting at the JNU campus.

Umar and Anirban were sent to three days’ police remand by a city court yesterday after their surrender at midnight and subsequent arrest in the sedition case.

“We are presently investigating the case on the basis of one raw video”.

The police also enquired whether two of them were the main organisers of the February 9 event against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, and whether they were involved in anti-India sloganeering which allegedly took place.

The other students are Rama Naga, Ashutosh Kumar and Anant Prakash. They resurfaced in JNU campus on Monday night and surrendered before police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Prem Nath has been asked to coordinate the proceedings to avoid any unpleasant incident.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Kanhaiya in Delhi High Court, had contended that the student leader should be granted bail because the status report filed by the police today had no evidence of him raising any anti-India slogans.
