Notably, the Millat Bedari Muhim Committee (MBMC), which has a number of former AMU students, had written to Minister for Information and Broadcasting Arun Jaitley seeking a ban on the film.

The film, starring Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkumar Rao, is based on the real life incident of Dr Srinivas Ramchandra Siras, an Aligarh Muslim University academician, who was suspended from his job because of his sexual orientation.

Jasim Mohd, secretary of the MBMC, said it was wrong to name the movie as “Aligarh”. “Our stand is the city of Aligarh has, once again, killed professor Siras”, Mehta told Bollywod Country.

The actress even said that the film is “so attractive, it’s like a poem and I can go on talking about it”. A few days later, the professor was found dead under mysterious circumstances. “We won’t allow the screening of this movie if its name isn’t changed”. When we asked the 46-year-old star about the acceptance of homosexuals in small cities and villages, he said, “In am from a village and I studied in small town. The city is being tarnished by showing that such people also live here”.

Cinemas in the north Indian city of Aligarh were under mounting pressure Sunday to stop screening a movie set in the metropolis that tackles homophobia, following protests from right wing religious groups. “It has stirred up a debate within Aligarh society…”

“There were only a handful of people watching the movie that (Friday) evening. This only gives it unnecessary publicity”.

Manoj Bajpayee’s flick Aligarh got released yesterday (February 26th).
