‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ wins Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar

The film’s sound editors Mark Mangini and David White and sound mixers Chris Jenkins, Gregg Rudloff and Ben Osmo picked up Oscars for their categories.

As Miller and his film crew, stunt performers and actors spent 100 days “of hard yakka” shooting Mad Max: Fury Road in the unforgiving desert in the west African nation of Namibia, Sixel back in Sydney was presented with a daily dump of footage. Fury Road collected six of its possible awards: Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Makeup And Hairstyling.

The Battle of the Blockbusters was fought in the technical categories – Mad Max: Fury Road versus Star Wars: The Force Awakens – but there was simply no stopping Furiosa, with Mad Max taking home an impressive grand total of six Oscars.

Rock wasn’t alone in putting people of color in the spotlight on the movie industry’s biggest night.

The film follows 19-year-old Saba, a survivor of an attempted honor killing who was beaten, shot and thrown into a river after she ran off to marry a man. At the last moment, she tilted her head, meaning the bullet grazed her cheek instead of shattering her skull.

While Stallone missed out, another Hollywood veteran, best actor nominee Leonardo DiCaprio, is seen as the safest bet of the night for “The Revenant”, 22 years after his first of five acting nominations.

While the main theme of last night’s Academy Awards focused on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, there were actually some awards handed out, too – and several surprising wins and losses came along with them. The Oscar win was the second for director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who recently met with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif amid the growing global spotlight on the film. It has also won the award for Best sound editing beating some of the big names.

Also nominated is Cate Blanchett as best actress for Carol.

LOCAL WOMAN GOES HOLLYWOOD Sitting in the audience, Long Island entrepreneur Joy Mangano, the inspiration for the Oscar-nominated “Joy”, got a salute from Chris Rock.

“You realize if they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job”, he went on.

“Having been to the Oscars before, you’ve really got temper your expectations”, he said.

Jenny Beavan won her second career Oscar in 10 nominations for costume design for her work on the high-octane thriller.

Vikander, who also earned acclaim in the past year for her work in the sci-fi drama “Ex Machina, ” thanked her “Danish Girl” director, Tom Hooper, “for your support and belief in me”.
