The airport said at 11am that the runway had been closed temporarily “due to a spillage”, but will reopen “shortly”.

Gatwick initially told The Independent the incident began at “around 10.30am” on Monday morning – but a woman sat in a jet stuck on the runway said her plane had been sitting around for nearly an hour before that.
Other flights have been forced to remain in the air, and will be given priority to land once the runway is clear.
The cause of the spillage has not been confirmed.
“Gatwick said it hoped to reopen the runway soon”.

Flight tracking data appeared to show at least three incoming flights circling in the skies above the airport.
