Openly gay character coming soon to Star Wars universe?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still playing in theaters, but the movie’s home video release may be closer than you think.

In The Simpsons episode Mayored To The Mob, a sci-fi convention tag-team wrestling match at saw the two take on a pair of Cylons in a match billed as the “Mighty robots of Battlestar Galactica vs the gay robots of Star Wars”. “Come and discover how Christianity and Star Wars share similar strategies in helping young people discover, connect, and abide in God and the Force”, the church said about the event.

By Abrams’ logic, the sprawling Star Wars universe couldn’t possibly exist without a gay populace-even if we haven’t seen a single character identified as gay thus far. Recently Abrams spoke out about the exclusion of gay characters in the film-franchise, calling the practice “insanely narrow-minded”.

Considering how many planets are in the films alone – not to mention the ones mentioned in the Expanded Universe, which may or may not be gleaned for new movie plots – it stands to reason there would be gay characters.

Filmmaker JJ Abrams says a gay Star Wars character can be a strong possibility as he wants the franchise to showcase the society we live in today.

The Force Awakens scored five nominations – for editing, visual effects, sound editing, sound mixing and original score for composer John Williams – and Abrams said he would be rooting for his collaborators on Sunday.

Jesse Plemons was asked about nearly being cast in Star Wars: The Force Awakens by Vulture as he promoted Other People, the drama comedy that opened up the Sundance Film Festival last month.

He told the Daily Beast that conversations about what that diversity will look like are already ongoing, and implied that fans should be optimistic about meeting the galaxy’s first openly gay character.

“I can never thank you enough for your faith, your patience, your kindness and your guidance throughout this insane incredible thing”.

The 49-year-old director said there’s a need to have a better representation of this world. At this point, it feels like we’ve seen more of Episode VIII than the Star Wars movie coming this December.
