This Oscar Winner’s Outfit Was Given Major Side-Eye At The Ceremony

But when costume designer Jenny Beavan made her way to the front of the Dolby Theatre, it looked like a LOT of people weren’t applauding her achievement!

Jenny Beavan had just won her second Oscar for best costume design, but as she heads toward the stage, Hollywood heavyweights sneer at her from the crowd. But apparently, she didn’t go over well when it came to the fussy Academy audience.

Jenny wore a black leather jacket with crystals on the back, as well as a stripy scarf – and this seemed to catch the interest of The Revenant director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Spotlight director Tom McCarthy. The costume designer, who has been nominated for an Oscar 10 times, won previously for 1986’s A Room With a View-a glorious vision of Victorian sartorial excess so luscious you could rightly call it a frockumentary.

Pointing to her fake leather jacket, she added: “This is Marks & Spencer with Swarovski at the back”. In addition to being good at her job, she also proved to us that she’s a badass at award show outfits and acceptance speeches.

“I really don’t do frocks and I absolutely don’t do heels”, she said.

“Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to the awards dressed like a bag lady”, Fry said after Beavan collected her award.

Anyone who’s seen Fury Road may very well agree that her winning this award was incredibly well deserved.

Others have offered a more charitable take on the muted reception to Beavan’s win: the Oscars are a long night, with “Best Costume Design” one of the less notable of the awards compared to Best Picture, Best Actor / Actress. “I had a bit of a shoe malfunction and the glitter fell off. I just like feeling comfortable and as far as I’m concerned I’m really dressed up”.
