Oscar time: The last 15 Academy Award winners for Best Picture
The 88th Academy Awards aired Sunday night amid great controversy – a handful of actors boycotted the awards show because of the lack of nominee diversity (see: #OscarsSoWhite on Twitter). The script by Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy tells the story of the Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation of sex abuse by Catholic priests. Today, Key is getting in the mood for the 2016 Oscars – which he’ll be attending – by demonstrating some of the steps that helped create the look of “Mad Max: Fury Road”, one of three movies nominated for this year’s best makeup and hairstyling Oscar. “They’re two very different films”, he says. Mad Max: Fury Road was an action film revelation soaring at the intersection of progressive ideology and high-adrenaline direction.

Sympathising that Pinkett Smith’s husband Will Smith wasn’t nominated for his role in Concussion, he said: “It’s also not fair Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West“.
Will Win: Alejandro Inarritu, and it’ll be deserved and an incredible achievement. “I can’t believe this is happening”. Bet the farm on it. The perpetual also-ran has the support of the industry, the love of fans and a juicy, highly physical role in “The Revenant”. “We were too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won best cinematography”.
My night will be made if Don Hertzfeldt’s World of Tomorrow wins best animated short, if Saoirse Ronan wins Best Actress for Brooklyn, or if Ennio Morricone gets a Lifetime Achievement award for The Hateful Eight.
But numerous films that could have put a charge into this year’s awards didn’t fit the limited confines of Oscar bait.
In the best sound editing category, Australian David White won alongside Mark A. Mangini.
In an upset, Mark Rylance won the supporting actor prize for “Bridge of Spies”, although Sylvester Stallone was widely favored to win for “Creed”.
Jaws will drop if best actor doesn’t go to Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant”, 22 years after his first of five acting nominations.
The three other best picture nominees, The Martian, Bridge of Spies and Brooklyn, are also pegged at 100/1. Since Alicia Vikander should win an Oscar for Ex Machina, her nomination in the stale Danish Girl is some sort of thrown bone. Spotlight and The Big Short would also make the cut, and probably The Martian. McKay thanked Paramount Pictures for taking a risk on a movie about “financial esoterica”. The film takes viewers for a hell of a ride, but will it win the Best Picture Oscar? Both are among the best films of the year (and should have been recognized as such in the main category). It’s hard to call “The Revenant” a dark horse considering many consider it to be the frontrunner, but I include it in this category because it has a great shot of winning despite my reservations about handing it the Oscar. “You’d be watching Neil Patrick Harris right now”, he said to applause.
The Academy have spent the last few months voting on who should walk away with the coveted Oscars in categories including Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Picture.
For Pakistan, it was time for celebrations as filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won the Oscar for Best Documentary-Short Subject for her project based on honour killing titled “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”.
