IBM moving into cybersecurity incident response with purchase of Resilient Systems

Its clients uses incident response platform technology to respond to security breaches faster with greater precision and coordination, allowing orchestration of response process across functions such as security, HR, finance, government relations, etc. and across security systems including monitoring data, applications, end points, networks, etc. But even the best-laid plans can go awry-it is just as crucial to have a strategy for the event that a security breach occurs.

“A major benefit [of the acquisition] will be the planned combinations of Resilient Systems’ Incident Response Platform with IBM QRadar Security Intelligence Incident Forensics, BigFix, IBM X-Force Exchange and IBM Incident Response Services that can enable an orchestrated process for addressing security incidents”, claimed IBM in its statement.

Resilient Systems®, the industry standard solution for incident response (IR), announced the release of Version 25 of its award-winning Incident Response Platform (IRP).

IBM will also acquire the services of Resilient Chief Technology Officer Bruce Schneier, an internationally acclaimed cryptographer and security analyst, who has also authored many books that explain cybersecurity.

Incident response specialist Resilient Systems – which is in the process of being acquired by IBM – has designed its latest Resilient Commercial Incident Response Platform (IRP) to meet the needs of mid-sized organizations.

The Cyber Resilient Organization: Learning to Thrive Against Threats, a recent study from the Ponemon Institute, revealed that 75 percent of US organizations are not prepared to respond to cyberattacks, leaving them vulnerable against the increasing intensity and volume of security threats.

Toni Saccanoghi, a senior analyst at Bernstein, wrote after attending the analyst conference last Thursday: “IBM has invested aggressively in acquiring capabilities and in securing data, particularly in health care, which it sees as a core asset, akin to content in the media world”.

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but it is expected to close later this year.

Cambridge, Mass.-based Resilient Systems has approximately 100 employees.

This is IBM’s third acquisition of a Boston-area security company in the past decade. It also helps clients analyze the impact of threats to the organization.

Through its latest acquisition, IBM will get hold of Resilient’s huge customer base that includes 30 Fortune 500 companies. This enables clients to respond and mitigate cyber incidents more quickly while helping minimise their exposure, according to the company. IBM X-Force security experts will help clients develop response strategies, including Computer Incident Response Team playbooks, and a means to more effectively discover, track, respond to and report on security incidents.
