The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a plea asking for contempt charges to be levelled against Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar. He said the petitioner has directly approached the apex court for bail without discussing anything on the merit of the case.

Ramachandran pleaded that approaching the High Court would mean another round of “elaborate bandobast” while Dhawan joined him with a request “to entertain this extraordinary petition under extraordinary circumstances”. Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi had claimed that Kumar was never attacked while being produced in the court premises. Even the Supreme court had commented that the lawyers have stoop down to such a low level. He was roughed up and chased away from the Patiala House Court by agitating lawyers when he was taken there during the day.

Some of the lawyers, including Chauhan, who were caught on camera leading brazen assaults on journalists and JNU students in Patiala House courts, on Monday and Wednesday were part of the protest and appeared to be unfazed by the outrage over their actions.

It also asked the Indian government and the Delhi police to ensure that adequate security was put in place at the high court to ensure Mr Kumar’s safety.

Former Delhi University lecturer S A R Geelani, who was arrested in connection with another event marking Guru’s death, was ordered to remain behind the bars till March 2, his lawyers told AFP on Friday.

Parliamentarians, including CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI general secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy, petitioned President Pranab Mukherjee for the release of Mr Kumar and the withdrawal of sedition cases against all students.

Protests have also spread to other universities across the country.
