SC Gives Clinton Her Most Important Win Yet

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton speaks to supporters at her election night watch party after winning the South Carolina Democratic primary in Columbia, S.C., Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016.

The victory in SC will allow Clinton to re-claim the psychic mantle of “front-runner”, for better or worse, and to add to her lead in Democratic delegates. “[Ms. Clinton] could effectively put the race away on Tuesday if she were to do as well on Super Tuesday as she has done in SC and Nevada”, David Wasserman, analyst for the non-partisan Cook Political Report, told USA Today.

“Let me be clear on one thing tonight: This campaign is just beginning”, Sanders said.

The party establishment and news outlets keep talking about Marco Rubio as the Trump alternative, but there is one problem: He hasn’t won a single state yet. Sanders is hoping to stay close to Clinton in the South while focusing most of his attention on states in the Midwest and Northeast, including his home state of Vermont. Sanders has failed to make the inroads among minorities necessary to overtake Clinton.

Al Jazeera said that Clinton’s win “offers a tremendous psychological and political victory” ahead of tomorrow’s contests.

When asked which candidate they thought “can win in November”, an overwhelming 79 percent said Clinton, with only 21 percent putting their faith in Sanders to defeat the eventual Republican nominee.

As voters in South Carolina’s Democratic primary cast ballots that would ultimately lead to a landslide victory for Hillary Clinton against Vermont Sen. But on Saturday, in the lead up to the all-important Super Tuesday primaries, Clinton managed to shift the race back in her favor, demolishing expectations with a huge win in South Carolina’s primary.

“I think it is very important for us to be honest about systemic racism, especially those of us who are white”, Clinton said at Meharry Medical College in Nashville.

Clinton assiduously courted black voters, in part by praising Obama and promising to build on his legacy. Ventura says he disagrees with some of Trump’s platform, namely on foreign policy and immigration, but he appreciates the NY businessman’s self-funded campaign, as well as Sanders’ stance on accepting contributions.

In her victory speech, Clinton also took aim at the Republican front-runner, Donald Trump, calling at least twice for more “love and kindness”. While there are primaries all through the month of March, Super Tuesday is where campaigns on either side of the aisle can gain a lot of momentum toward winning the Democratic or Republican nomination.

SC was the first southern state to vote for a 2016 Democratic nominee, before the race broadens to 11 contests across the country. Clinton won whites who were 45 and older by a narrow margin, and won almost all of the vote among blacks 45 and older, according to ABC News. Less than 1 in 10 said they trust Sanders over Clinton.

Sanders holds a 48 to 42 percent lead among men and 58 to 36 lead among voters aged 29 and younger, according to the survey. Democrats award delegates proportionally throughout the primary season.

Clinton’s campaign hopes her strong showing in SC foreshadows similar outcomes in states such as Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Virginia that vote Tuesday and have large minority populations. “America has never stopped being great”, Clinton declared. Sanders would need to dominate states like Minnesota, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Colorado.

Republicans vote in 13 states on Tuesday, and the four challengers to Donald Trump, the real estate billionaire who is leading in the polls and has won three of the four early states so far, may face pressures to drop out if they can not steal some of Trump’s thunder. Sen. Ted.

“You can’t tell much from tax returns” anyway, Trump said on CNN.

Sanders also released a national television ad Monday in which he outlines how he believes “corrupt politics” and political contributions from the wealthy contribute to a “rigged economy”. “I think you’ve got major states coming up”. “But I’m telling you from the bottom of my heart, we do”.

Although candidates can be a little lucky or unlucky in the splits of individual CDs, the overall statewide delegate split will usually be roughly proportional to the statewide vote.
