According to a Driving Miss Norma Facebook page, reportedly started by Norma’s family, two days after losing her husband Leo of 67 years, the nonagenarian received devastating news – she had a “likely cancerous” mass on her uterus.

After finding out she had uterine cancer, a 90-year-old MI woman told doctors she was hitting the road. After Norma’s husband passed away, it was hard for her to live alone.

Surprisingly the doctor encouraged the trip, saying the potentially life-saving surgery could actually kill Norma. “She continues to surprise us on this trip”, she said. The 50-year-old Ramie said her mother-in-law was basically up for anything when they toured the country, from Mount Rushmore to the Grand Canyon.

From there, they headed back east towards Florida where Norma recently went whale watching, visited NASA, sampled key lime pies, and got in touch with her inner child at Walt Disney World. This was a attractive Christmas gift from her son and daughter in law. “She’s getting healthier, I think, from eating well and being outside a lot”.

“We see a spark in her eye that we haven’t seen in a very long time. She’s with her loved ones and that’s really important”, she added.

The trio hopes Norma’s story will help other families discuss end-of-life plans.

Photos from the special ride on Facebook show Norma grinning in delight as she’s carried in and out of the balloon.

The whole trip has been documented on the “Driving Miss Norma” facebook page and has already racked up more than 65,000 followers. “Everyone has different ideas about how they want the end of their life to work”, said Ramie.

Right now, Tim, Ramie, Norma, and their dog Ringo are still enjoying all that Florida has to offer.
