Rumors that Manchester United had been rebuffed by Bayern Munich on an $89 million bid for German striker Thomas Muller are untrue, acccording to the Manchester Evening News.

Thomas Muller created 40 chances during the 2014/15 campaign, only Mario Gotze (45) and Arjen Robben (50) created more than him.

They report that manager Louis van Gaal has personally been lobbying chief executive Ed Woodward to return with an improved bid for the German global, even during the ongoing U.S. tour, and United are claimed to be ready to offer a five-year deal to Muller.

The 25-year-old worked under Van Gaal when he was in charge of the German champions between 2009 and 2011 and his versatility up front would suit the United boss’ proposed 4-3-3 formation.

Bayern have rejected a previous offer of €82 million (£57 million) turned down.

Meanwhile, on the pitch, Muller had another excellent term a year ago as Bayern won yet another Bundesliga title.

The versatile attacker who can also slot in as an attacking midfielder, scored 13 and dished out 10 assists last season.

He is now on Bayern’s pre-season tour of China, and if he joined, would link up with former club mate Bastian Schweinsteiger at Old Trafford.
