UN to vote Wednesday on new North Korea sanctions

The government has repeatedly warned of possible terrorist attacks carried out by North Korea on the South following the communist nation’s recent nuclear test and launch of a long-range rocket. It was the first time Park used the word “dialogue” in connection with inter-Korean relations in any of her public speeches or statements since North Korea’s fourth nuclear test in January.

Anchor: North Korea’s Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong unveiled on Tuesday that his country will no longer participate in UN Human Rights Council(UNHRC) sessions, claiming at the latest session that the council was plagued by “politicization”. “Instead, she stressed the need to keep up pressure and sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear program, while urging Tokyo to fully implement the terms of the two countries” agreement on the comfort women issue last December 28.

North Korea’s Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong addresses the 28th Session of the Human Rights Council at the United Nations in Geneva on March 3, 2015.

The proposal would also close a gap in the United Nations arms embargo on Pyongyang by banning all weapons imports and exports.

It has an unprecedented ban on the transfer to North Korea of any item that could directly contribute to the operational capabilities of the North Korean armed forces, such as trucks that could be modified for military purposes. Under a previous resolution, they were encouraged to do so.

The resolution would also ban sales of gold, titanium and rare earth minerals from North Korea and would prohibit the supply of aviation fuel including rocket fuel to the reclusive country.

– Adds to the list of banned items luxury watches, recreational watercrafts such as Sea-Doos, snowmobiles valued at more than $2000, items of lead crystal and recreational sports equipment.

North Korea insisted Wednesday that its regime “cherishes people”, amid renewed pressure over its human rights record. Pyongyang denied the February 7 launch involved banned ballistic missile technology, saying it was a peaceful satellite launch.

In a signed letter broadcast on state-run media, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un wrote that he wanted to ring in the new year with, quite literally, a bang. “He’s not even in Russian Federation, that’s the problem”, Churkin said.

There is also an exception for transshipments of Russian coal via the North Korean port of Rajin.

Countering Seoul’s call for denuclearization prior to peace treaty talks, Pyongyang demanded both Seoul and Washington first give up what it calls their hostile policy towards North Korea.

In addition to NADA, North Korean entities to be blacklisted include the Academy of National Defense Sciences, Chongchongang Shipping Co and the Ministry of Atomic Energy Industry.

The draft resolution would require states to freeze the assets of any entity of the North Korean government or the ruling Workers Party of Korea that is associated with the nuclear and missile programs or other prohibited activities.
