Chris Rock’s Oscars 2016 Opening Monologue Skewers Oscars So White Backlash

“I’m here at the Academy Awards, otherwise known as White People’s Choice Awards”, Rock joked.

“Let us not take this planet for granted, I do not take tonight for granted”.

He said his experience shooting the film in the Canadian and Argentine wilderness brought him even closer to his belief that climate change is a critical issue.

Early Nielsen data from the top 56 US cities showed that the audience for the ceremony aired on the Walt Disney Co-owned ABC network fell by 6 percent compared with last year’s Oscars telecast.

Chris Rock is responsible for one of the most brilliantly uncomfortable things that’s ever happened at the Academy Awards. “I’m sure there were no black nominees in some of those years … and black people did not protest”, he said. “Maybe it is time we pull back our resources and we put them back into our communities”.

That’s amusing – well, sharp amusing. I thought about it real hard, but I realized they’re going to have the Oscars anyway.

“Jada [Pinkett Smith] is going to boycott the Oscars-Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!” Ouch.

But he didn’t stop there, nor should he have.

The host also took on Hollywood’s systematic racism, and the separation of females and males in acting categories. Is it burning-cross racist? Lee has argued in recent interviews that Hollywood needs not just more black Oscar nominees but also more minorities in positions of power at the movie studios. “You’d all be watching Neil Patrick Harris right now”. Hollywood is sorority racist. It’s like, “We like you Rhonda, but you’re not a Kappa”.

“It’s not about boycotting anything. We want black actors to get the same opportunities as white actors“. And that’s it. Not just once.

“You do this every year?”, he asked the engraver.

When he failed to pick up the gong for either Best Actor or Best Picture (as producer), the Internet nearly shut down under the sheer weight of “Poor Leo” memes. And in other moments.

“Man, I counted at least 15 black people on that montage”.
