Cuomo: Train derails in NW New York, forcing evacuations

A train derailment in upstate NY has caused a hazardous spill, resulting in the evacuation of some homes near the town of Ripley, officials said.

Officials say about 30 people are at a shelter set up at a church. They evacuated about 55 homes within a 1,000 foot radius of the accident, which is in the town of Ripley.

No injuries or fires were reported, but emergency responders were on the scene to contain the spill. The train was pulling 33 cars, 14 of which derailed, the Norfolk Southern spokesperson said.

Governor Cuomo said in a statement overnight several homes in the immediate vicinity and other nearby residents were evacuated.

Crews from several departments are working to assist HAZMAT teams spray foam to contain the leak which was flowing at about a gallon per minute. There was no fire, but 3 of the cars were carrying hazardous liquids, at least two are confirmed to be leaking ethanol. Officials say one tanker has been contained and crews are working on the other.

Ripley is located in western Chautauqua County near Lake Erie, about 10 miles from the Pennsylvania border.
