Early Wednesday morning, the NHL began the process of revealing the players that will be competing in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, and to the surprise of no one, the Chicago Blackhawks will be well represented at the tournament in Toronto this fall. Capitals Coach Barry Trotz will also be at the worldwide tournament in September, as he’s an assistant coach for Team Canada. This will be Kuznetsov’s first time representing Russian Federation in a best-on-best tournament.
Teams have until June 1 to make their final seven roster selections.
The other teams in the event are Russia, Czech Republic, Sweden (12:30 p.m. roster release), Europe (4:30 p.m.) and North America (5:15 p.m.).
Team Canada: 6:05 p.m.
Other native Minnesotans (besides Parise) who could be on Team USA are defensemen Ryan McDonagh (Rangers), Erik Johnson (Colorado), Dustin Byfuglien (Winnipeg) and Justin Faulk (Carolina); and forwards Brock Nelson and Kyle Okposo of the Islanders, Derek Stepan of the Rangers, Blake Wheeler of Winnipeg, T.J. Oshie of Washington and David Backes of St. Louis.
Mikko Koivu and Mikael Granlund of the Wild are on Finland’s preliminary roster for the World Cup of Hockey.
Edmonton Oilers winger Lauri Korpikoski has been named to Team Finland’s roster.
The 44-year-old forward’s future has been in question beyond this season, his second with the Florida Panthers.
