Browns’ Mack voids contract, becomes free agent

Mack is 30 years old and still in his prime as an offensive lineman.

Alex Mack is voiding the three years remaining on his contract with the Cleveland Browns and is set to become a free agent. “It was built into his contract to afford him maximum flexibility”.

The addition of Jackson and Goff – or another top quarterback prospect such as Carson Wentz of North Dakota State or Paxton Lynch of Memphis – would likely be as appealing to Mack as it is to Thomas, who said last week “the future is really bright for the Cleveland Browns” as long as they pick the right quarterback. For the first time in his career, he will be experiencing true free agency.

A three-time Pro Bowler, Mack was taken in the first round of the 2009 draft by the Browns out of California. He recently met with new coach Hue Jackson to discuss the team’s plans going forward.

He will be eligible to sign with other teams on March 9th, but the Browns can continue to negotiate with him.

Mack was set to make $24 million over the next three years, but chose to opt out of the deal, said the person who spoke Wednesday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.

“I will say that winning is really important to me”, Mack said, per Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. It is in his contract that he can not be tagged, according to ESPN.

After being hit with the transition tag in March of 2014, the Jacksonville Jaguars offered a five year, $42 milion deal with an opt out clause of 2015. Given that he’s anchored on the best offensive lines in football the last few years, some team that is in dire need of an upgrade at center will certainly like to pay Mack handsomely.
