CONSERVATIVE Party International Development Critic Deepak Obhrai on Tuesday called on International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau to provide more humanitarian assistance to the cyclone victims of Fiji.

“A family home will be a very precious place where my children will grow up healthier”.

Nearly 14,000 people are sheltering in 274 evacuation centres around Fiji.

“This storm has changed the island nation of Fiji forever…it also changed our lives forever”, says Worley.

“People are going out during the day to recover what they can, it’s not like they’re sitting in the shelters helpless, they are salvaging what they can and dusting themselves off”, Clements said.

Several countries, including China, India, New Zealand, and Australia have offered emergency aid.

People of Indian origin account for 44 percent of Fiji’s population.

Aid agencies have begun to reach even the most isolated villages and Unicef’s Patrick Rose said sanitation specialists are moving in on the worst hit villages.

He said there had been minimal contact with some isolated communities “so we’re not sure how much further the death toll will rise”.

ONE News Reporter Jessica Mutch has the latest from Fiji on the effort to help Cyclone Winston hit areas.

He said they need to get the message out to our key markets that most Fijian resorts are open and functioning.

“The images emerging from early aerial assessments of affected areas are truly heartbreaking, leaving little doubt about the ferocity of this cyclone”, said the UN’s Fiji coordinator Osnat Lubrani.
