Mario Maker update adds super expert mode, Thwomps and more next week

Super Mario Maker has received rave reviews and top-shelf fan creations since its launch around six months ago.

A new Super Mario Maker update arrives on March 9 introducing Course Elements, another Mario Challenge mode, and a dozen new Mystery Mushroom costumes. The rest of the elements revolve around the new key doors.

One of the most addicting features in the game is the 100-Mario Challenge, which tasks players with beating a randomized selection of user-created levels categorized into Easy, Normal and Expert difficulties with 100 lives. Coins can be shaken to turn them into pink coins, which will provide a key if you find all of them in a stage. Along with this new expert mode will be new costumes to unlock, such as Tetra.

The Mario Maker bookmark site will also be updated, adding ranking categories for world records and other options.

Course creators will also enjoy the update with several new toggles for items already in the game. Or, players can add a puzzle-like feel to their course by giving keys to enemies to hold onto to create mandatory boss levels. Shaking a Thwomp will transform it into a Skewer from Super Mario World-a much more deadly version of the obstacle that can be used to close off passages for those without impeccable jump timing. Bring it on, Mario!
