The 27-year-old was the big victor of the night, picking up prizes for Best Female Solo Artist, Best Album and the Global Success Award.
“To come back…I got lost for a while, I didn’t know if I was going to come back, and you all being so kind to me…”
Speaking about her boyfriend, Simon Konecki: “I am so lucky to have you love me like you do”.
Adele used the opportunity to declare support for American singer Kesha who is now involved in a legal battle with Sony Music and a producer she has accused of sexual assault. The singer Chris Martin dedicated the award to “all the young men and women musicians in refugee camps around the world”.
Bowie’s touring band performed a medley of his songs, while Lorde received a standing ovation for a cover of “Life on Mars”, which she sang wearing what looked like a Bowie-inspired white dress shirt and black vest.
Although Adele came out on top with four of the five awards she was nominated for, other celebrities had their time in the spotlight too. IBTimes UK highlights the best moments from the ceremony. In addition, Adele was the Best Female Solo Artist and her single “Hello” was the best single.
Other nominees were Calvin Harris and Disciples, Ed Sheeran and Rudimental, Ellie Goulding, James Bay, Jess Glynne, Little Mix, Olly Murs featuring Demi Lovato, Philip George, and Years & Years.
Rihanna’s performance of Work feat Drake at the Brits – which featured a surprise appearance by Drake himself – has helped her reach a new peak of number two.
Meanwhile, Coldplay opened the Brit Awards, in association with Mastercard, with “Hymn for the Weekend”, while Justin Bieber took to the stage to perform “Love Yourself” and “Sorry”. “You’re all incredible, you’re all fantastic and it’s a privilege to be alongside you”, she added.
He concluded his speed by saying: “David you were mortal, but your potential was super human, and your remarkable music is living on”.
The awards show featured a special tribute to David Bowie, who passed away in January.
