Americans in a dozen states head to the polls for a slew of primaries and caucuses Tuesday on what is considered the most important day of the presidential nominations calendar. This is the final debate before the Super Tuesday elections across the country. And of course, the bigger Cruz’s lead is in Texas, the more delegates he will amass.

On the Democratic side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has 91 delegates, compared to Vermont Sen. Ted Cruz in the state’s GOP primary.

There are 595 Republican delegates and 1,004 Democratic delegates up for grabs in Tuesday’s elections. At the midday publishing time of this article, Donald J. Trump and Hillary Clinton both were maintaining double-digit leads over their rivals. Garnering 50-plus percent of the statewide vote guarantees just 47 Republican delegates, while taking the remaining 108 will require capturing a majority of the votes cast in each congressional district.

There are two kinds of delegates: pledged, who must vote based on primary and caucus results; and unpledged, or super, who are permanent delegates and can vote for whom they please at the conventions.

Nicole Freed crossed over and voted for Republican Marco Rubio. Clinton’s totals include superdelegates that can support any candidate. Two exceptions are Alaska, where only Republican caucuses are being held, and Colorado, where only Democratic caucuses will take place.

This could all change on March 15 in the Florida primary – his home state – where the victor will claim all the delegates. This has been sufficient to generate large, enthusiastic crowds and a victory in New Hampshire and near misses in Nevada and Iowa. The voter will be given a card with a D or R designation, and an official will touch a button that activates the electronic ballot for the selected political party’s primary.
