Google Spotlight Stories arrives on iOS – beautiful, 360-degree, immersive

It was yesterday, that Google has introduced 360 degree video viewing on Android and Web, but it looks like Google is taking its 360 degree viewing pretty seriously, as it has launched its Spotlight Stories app on iOS platform today.

Immerse yourself in a world of storytelling made just for mobile.

The app itself is intended for entertainment purposes, as it offers stories built using 3D and 2D animations, 360-degree spherical “cinema-quality” video, sound sphere audio, and “sensor fusion techniques”, explains Google.

This means that you can hold up your handset or tablet, and move it around full 360-degrees to view the films from any angle. Users can’t use the app to make their own short movies. That film and all other content made for the Android app is now available for iOS users to check out.

There’s some heavy-duty talent behind the creation of the stories, the debut story Windy Days being created by former Pixar animators, and Help by Justin Lin, director of The Fast and the Furious … The videos were originally developed by Motorola before its 2011 acquisition by the search giant.

Now, along with the four original stories, Google has expanded Spotlight Stories to iOS devices. The app and all videos are free, though it should be noted that Google may start charging for the films, as the app says “Help” is only “free for a limited time”.
