Despite her superstar status, the singer proved that she was still as down-to-earth as ever, telling the crowd that it wasn’t bad for a “girl from Tottenham”.

“I bet you’re all f**king bored of me”, Adele said in between sniffles after accepting her third award.

However, when she came back on stage to receive another award (Yes, she aced four), she stated, “I’m really sorry about swearing earlier and I’m really sorry for the ugly cry face”.

All they had to do for that reaction to come out was get Louis and Liam Payne to announce that she’s won the British Female Solo award.

The 27-year old closed the show by performing When We Were Young.

Adele offered singer Kesha, who is fighting to get out of a contract with record producer Dr. Luke linked to allegations of sexual assault, support during her Brit Awards speech.

“Thank you, I can’t work out if I’m crying because of the video or because Tim Peake did it. My kid is going to think I’m so cool”, she said. Bowie was posthumously honoured with the Icon Award and a performance from his former live touring band, who gave the most-talked about moment of the night.

Other nominees were Calvin Harris and Disciples, Ed Sheeran and Rudimental, Ellie Goulding, James Bay, Jess Glynne, Little Mix, Olly Murs featuring Demi Lovato, Philip George, and Years & Years.

The show also offered a tribute to the late David Bowie through a performance by Annie Lennox and Lorde who sang Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and “Starman”.

United States band Eagles Of Death Metal, whose concert was targeted in the November Paris attacks, lost out to Australia’s Tame Impala in the global group category. “They could be us and we could be them, so we send them our love and thank you so much for giving us our job”.

James Bay was named British Male Solo Artist, while Coldplay won British Group. I don’t want to sound cheesy, but you’re so wonderful. Wearing a faux suit, he said: “It’s a huge honour to be part of this incredible night from up here on board the International Space Station”.

Other winners included Bjork (best worldwide female) and Coldplay (best British group).

A BRIT award is the British version of the American Grammys. The Brit-pop band won four awards in 1995 for their album Parklife.
