No one clapped for Jenny Beavan at The Oscars
Notably, “Spotlight” director Tom McCarthy and “The Revenant” director Alejandro Iñárritu – who quite conveniently seemed to have forgotten about the “equality” he spoke about on his speech – can be seen in the background, glowering at her like she had personally insulted them with her choice of wardrobe.

Bevan, who has been nominated 10 times for an Oscar for two wins, has snapped up several awards for her work in the dystopian action thriller, including Guild and BAFTA awards for best costume. “I’ve got a bad back that, and I look ridiculous in a lovely gown”.
“All those famous guys didn’t clap for Jenny Beavan because they were consumed with jealousy over her badass jacket”, Suzan Eraslan tweeted. I’m short, I’m fat.
However, we’re thinking she’ll fall back on her silverware for comfort.
“The Academy didn’t say anything about a strict dress code”, Bevan continued.
Last month, the English designer was called a “bag lady” by Steven Fry at the Baftas when she wore a leather jacket and black pants (she won for best costume design, by the way). I was furious about that! By editing and omitting the full reality and suggesting I felt anything but admiration is mean-spirited and false.
“I still can’t get over how all those people refused to clap as Jenny Beaven walked up to get her Oscar”, one user wrote. Because, like, why as long as they clap for a female older than 30 who doesn’t fit the mold of traditional Hollywood beauty, right? People can be invented, but Ant Man must look like Ant Man. What I was offered was this incredible chance to bring what was in George’s mind to life, which was just almost bonkers.
The Oscar evening on February 28 got political, when messages came in multiple iterations throughout the night from some of the most thoughtful artists in Hollywood.
The reaction has been slightly frightening, but thank God I don’t do social media. “I really don’t do frocks, and I absolutely don’t do heels”. I love film acting and acting in TV dramas – and writing. You don’t actually have to look like a supermodel to be successful.
