In his over an hour-long speech, Modi, however, didn’t speak about raging issues like crackdown on Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students and death of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad University that had stalled parliament for two days earlier this week.

“If I would have been present there (in the House), I would have responded to his statement. Obstructing Parliament’s functioning should be equated with an expression of lack of confidence in the parliamentary system itself – if not as a declaration of war on the people of the country”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lashed out against opposition in a 75-minute speech in Parliament on Thursday.

The Congress today accused Narendra Modi of creating a “smokescreen” to hide his failures after the Prime Minister ignored issues agitating the nation while replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the President’s joint address last month.

With regard to GST, which is aimed at overhauling the taxation system in the country, Modi told the Congress, “it is yours only, still it is being stopped”.

Modi also referred to Left leader Somnath Chatterjee who was Lok Sabha speaker during the first UPA government from 2004 to 2009. But you have made poverty so deep-rooted that it is so hard to uproot it…

“It is not me saying this…” This will bring a fresh perspective to proceedings.

Stating the BJP’s electoral promise of providing everyone with 15 lakhs rupees, Gandhi said that he asked the Prime Minister when he is going to fulfill that promise. “We feel that the people here should run the government”, he said.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Friday criticised the Modi Led BJP government stating that the government did not want to give an ear to the voice of the people.

-There are many things which are your (Congress) legacy. “If it is not successful, you should suggest what should be done to make it successful”, he said. He said his government was improving its implementation and trying to generate assets under it. “You have sown the roots of poverty so deep, there is no denying this”, he said, adding sarcastically that if he tries to tackle it, he himself will get uprooted. Similarly water conservation is also a very important need of time.

Mr Singhvi said merely because the Congress vice-president raises genuine concerns, as many as three senior ministers jumped in to deflect the questions asked to Mr Modi. Let us walk shoulder to shoulder and do some good work for the nation. Congress is anxious with our performance, suffering from inferiority complex. One MP said Fasal Bima Yojana is only for few districts. Because dalits and adivasis study there and you don’t want them to grow.

“I remember 15 years back, there was unrest in Assam – blood spilt, and there were tears”.

-I have learned to live with criticism. No one is less than the PM. We indulge in verbal brawls because we fear what will be printed in the newspapers. It is for devolving responsibilities on the ground; so that the administration can be made accountable; so that participation of people can be increased in schemes as also in social justice and development. And I can’t do this by myself. “I have full faith in the constitution of the country”. I am new, you are experienced.
