Thousands attend memorial for slain Texas officer

Police Officer David Hofer, 29, was killed by a man who had just burglarized a home and had stolen several guns. Hofer was killed Tuesday while serving in the line of duty.

Brown said Hofer was one of the officers who responded to a report of shots fired near J.A. Carr Park, which is in a residential area near an elementary school.

David Hofer and the Euless PD Saturday afternoon with a memorial service at Bedford’s Pennington Field. He was remorseful over the actions of his son but also questioned why he was released from jail if still under the influence of meth. “Why would they let him out when he was on that stuff?”

“Police officers sacrifice so much for us, and a lot of people take them for granted”, said North Richland Hills resident Josh Thomas. His family said he was only violent when he was on the drugs.

“It is a sad day for the city of Euless and its citizens”, said Jim Pack, chaplain of the Euless Police Department, as he opened the service.

When Gonzales’ sister, 17-year-old Jennifer Gonzales, heard there had been a shooting in Euless, she actually joked and said, “That’s my brother”.

In 2014, Hofer moved to Plano, seeking a break from the intensity of patrolling New York’s streets. “He felt the community rallied around police officers more”. When the procession arrived at the almost full stadium, uniformed officers stood at attention and saluted until Hofer’s casket and Euless police officers had passed by.
