Toronto Cab Drivers File Class-Action Lawsuit Against Uber

An Ontario taxi owner has filed a $400-million class-action suit against Uber Canada – on the same day the ride-sharing company announced its expansion into four more cities across the province.

They seek an injunction against the service, as well as more than $400 million in damages.

The firm said that numerous Uber Black, Uber SUV and Uber Taxi drivers are properly licensed drivers who operate in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act governing the taxicab and limousine businesses in Ontario.

As apart of launching the service in these new locations, Uber is telling customers that their “first 4 rides will be free”.

It promised Uber prices will be up to 25% cheaper than a traditional taxi.

Hamilton’s cab drivers have been fighting Uber’s arrival for months, saying it will hurt their business.

Heath said the company is “on track to create more than 2,400 driver partner jobs in Southwestern Ontario over the next year”.

Caranci said people using taxis know the vehicle is inspected, insured and the drivers have had background checks done through police services.

“I’m not sure the grass is going to be greener on the Uber side of the fence”, he said.
