Alligator spotted on NYC stroll

Upper Manhattan residents got a toothy visitor Thursday when a crocodile was spotted casually walking down the street.

Urban legend has it that gators have long lived in New York City sewers, which was confirmed by a 2010 spotting in Astoria.

Cops from the 34th Precinct corralled the 3-foot-long reptile at Ninth Avenue and 205th Street in Inwood until Animal Care & Control collected it, police said. “I dunno, it just came up the river?” Officers apprehended an 18-inch alligator, which crawled out of an overflowing storm drain and found refuge under a parked vehicle, reported the New York Post. The alligator could have come from there, or it may have been a pet let loose in the city. The agency is now seeking to place it with a wildlife rehabilitator.

Earlier this week, a Brooklyn man was charged after police discovered nine boa constrictors and an alligator inside his home during a raid.
