Microsoft Send: Mobile instant messaging through e-mail

Microsoft has no wish to replace the Outlook email app. Instead, Send was created for situations in which users just have to zip off a short-and-sweet message to coworkers. That’s where Send comes in. It syncs the communications with Outlook in case you need to reference a conversation later.

Microsoft’s back again with yet another app from its Microsoft Garage unit, and this one’s a new email app called Send.

Send is available for iPhone in the U.S. and Canada, and is coming soon to Windows Phone and Android phones.

The Redmond-based company says Send was built specifically for brief, snappy communications.

Send is the child of Microsoft Garage, an internal initiative that allows Microsoft employees to explore various forward-looking ideas and projects.

Taking Goolge’s Gmail and other email apps head on, Microsoft recently launched a new Outlook app for iOS and Android devices.

Microsoft issued updates to the Office apps-Word, Excel and PowerPoint-for both iPhone and iPad this morning, adding support for new languages, simpler sharing, and other features. Think of Microsoft Send as a more workplace inspired version of Apple’s iMessage. This means you can message anyone with an email account even if they don’t have the app. Send will also only display messages started from the app, so you don’t have to wade through your entire inbox.

And while it does kind of resemble text messaging, it’s linked in with a user’s Outlook account, tapping email addresses rather than mobile phone numbers. Also, Send doesn’t show you all your emails, only the ones you started in the app, which makes it far more usable than some alternatives.

Some of the Send messages include quick messages like, “Let’s chat in 10”, “Don’t send the presentation yet”, and “Are you in the Office today?” “Our design principle for the app was to make conversations fast and fluid while keeping the people who are important to you at its core“.
