U.S. election 2016: Trump and Clinton remain front-runners

Even though the Flint water crisis was addressed briefly in the most recent GOP debate, you can bet that the topic will be front and center tomorrow night.

Clinton expected her score of 51 delegates at the Louisiana Primary, which gave her a stronger foothold on the way to the White House. The stage is set for Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders to debate once again.

“I believe that he is a true fighter for conservatives”, said Berry, a 67-year-old retired AT&T manager.

Trump had campaigned in Maine this week as well and hoped to have a strong showing, touting his endorsement from Maine Gov. Paul LePage.

US Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz has won nominating contests in Kansas and ME, staking his claim to be the prime alternative for the Republicans bent on stopping front-runner Donald Trump.

On March 15, the Democratic primaries include Florida, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.

This will be the last Democratic debate before Tuesday’s primaries in MI and Mississippi.

“The governor should resign or be recalled and we should support the efforts of citizens attempting to achieve that”, Clinton said.

Seeking to draw contrast, Sanders, a Senator from Vermont, hit the former secretary of state hard for her pro-trade policies and accused her of taking cash from Wall Street, as well as the fossil fuel and pharmaceutical industries. But Sanders continues to trail Clinton in state-level victories and delegates, and faces an uphill battle in trying to close the gap.

Driving his populist message railing against income inequality and combatting climate change, Sanders has beaten Clinton in New Hampshire, Colorado, Minnesota, Oklahoma, his home state in Vermont, and picked up Kansas and Nebraska on Saturday.

“People should be held accountable, wherever that leads”, Clinton said, adding an investigation should determine who in state and federal government was responsible. Media organizations predicted that Sanders would win Sunday’s ME caucus.

Sanders says: “We’re still fairly early in the process”.

“Louisiana is identical to the states she has been performing well in and likewise Bernie Sanders has done poorly in”, said Joshua Stockley, associate professor of political science at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

“We must focus on what should be done for people of Flint”, Clinton said, reminding the audience it was her idea to hold a debate in Flint.

Analysts had expected Clinton to do well, as she’s done in other Southern states.

Key primary election and caucus contests are scheduled in the coming weeks, with March 15 a key date on the campaign calendar.
