Sanders: GOP proof ‘we need to invest’ in mental health

Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders squared off Sunday night in a city battered by a water crisis – and that issue defined the early stages of the debate.

She also said that she stood up to Wall Street. She said there was a personal dimension to that, noting that she prays “for people whom I know by name”.

Yet such is the math of the presidential nominating process that Clinton won 57 pledged delegates to the 50 hauled in by Sanders, and so extended her lead in the overall Democratic presidential race.

Sanders’ victory in ME, which was announced during CNN’s Democratic debate in Flint, Michigan, is his third of the weekend after winning Kansas and Nebraska.

But Clinton argues that Sanders proposals on issues such as free college and a state-run health care system have little chance of being enacted in Washington.

Both candidates condemned local officials who they said abetted the crisis in Flint, and demanded the resignation of Republican Governor Rick Snyder of MI. That means Mrs Clinton’s single victory, in the most delegate- rich Democratic state voting that day, was likely to diminish the gains from Mr Sanders’ two wins.

Asked if he would fire the head of the federal Environmental Protection Agency if that person had failed to protect Flint, Mr. Sanders said, “President Sanders would fire anybody who knew about what was happening and did not act appropriately”. The group has protested at all the Democratic and Republican debates calling for the right to form a union, boost the minimum wage to fifteen dollars-an-hour and achieve racial equality.

The Democratic presidential campaign is unfolding amid themes of race, economic opportunity and the problems afflicting blue-collar workers that are crystallized in the city of Flint in an age of globalization. “It’s a winner-take-all state”, he said. OH votes on March 15 and it’s a state that Kasich says he has to win. But Bernie is not quitting so easily, the Senator from Vermont leads among independent voters with a 60 percent to Clinton’s 36 percent as well as with those under 45 years old with a 61 percent versus Clinton’s 39 percent.

Clinton ups the ante after echoing Sanders’ call for Snyder to resign: “But that is not enough, we must focus on what should be done for people of Flint. There has to be an absolute accountability and I will support whatever the outcome of those investigations are”.

“I think Donald Trump’s bigotry, his bullying, his bluster are not going to wear well on the American people”, Hillary said diligently, putting her Republican opponent in his place for the bad habits he continues to use during the election.

With about four-fifths of precincts reporting, Sanders leads rival Hillary Clinton by double digits, with more than 64 percent of the vote.

Sanders acknowledged that his campaign has yet to connect with African-American voters, which hurt in him badly in his SC loss last month to Clinton. Both have visited the city and called for a strong government response. The city has been under a state of emergency after high levels of lead and copper were discovered following a switch in its water supply in 2014 to the polluted Flint River from treated Lake Huron water. When U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida was asked about Flint during Thursday’s debate in Detroit, he defended Snyder and said the “politicising” of the crisis was unfair.
