Fan violence is nothing new in football, and when it leads to tragedy, the result leaves a black mark on the sport.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s statue was vandalised earlier this year in the hours after Lionel Messi beat the Portuguese to the Ballon D’Or award. The deceased threw a glass into the face of the accused person. The bottle hit the wall and broke into pieces. Nwabu picked up a glass shard and, in a fit of rage, slit the throat of the victim. He called the police and the hospital, but it was too late.

The police has booked the accused Chukwuma Michael Nwabu under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

Local police chief Kiran Kabadi confirmed that a Nigerian national had been arrested on suspicion of murder.
