Maha Shivratri: Significance of Rudra Abhishek and worship of ‘Shiva Linga’

Shivaratri falls on the moonless 14th night of the new moon in the Hindu month of Phalgun, which corresponds to the month of February – March in English Calendar.

On the occasion of Maha Shivratri on Monday, devotees in large numbers were seen visiting Shiva temples across the country.

Devotees of all age groups thronged Lord Shiva temples in various parts of the state to participate in special poojas and offered worship. It is the day when Lord Shiva was married to Goddess Parvati.

“Maha Shivratri greetings to everyone”, Prime Minister Modi said on twitter.

Cultural programmes were also organised in many temples.

The festival, which literally translates to “The great night of Lord Shiva”, is a celebration of the night when Lord Shiva performed the tandava.

The other major significance of this festival as per the Hindus’ belief is that by worshiping Lord Shiva on Maha Shivratri their all sins will be cleansed. Listen to these devotional songs and let your love for Shiva flow through your veins.

The famous prayer ceremony conducted on this day is the Maha Rudra Abhishek, which is performed to gain the blessing of Lord Shiva.
