Facebook Messenger’s long overdue Material Design makeover starts rolling out today

In January Marcus revealed Facebook had hit over 800m Messenger users, up from 200m in April 2014. Well, now you can use Messenger, Slack, or Starbucks to summon a ride – all without leaving either app. Amazeballs.

At F8 a year ago Facebook emphasised its plans to make Messenger more than just a communications tool but the hub for a whole variety of e-commerce related services.

The feature isn’t available to all Messenger users yet; Lyft said that it will be rolling out across the country “in the coming weeks”. When your friend receives the shared song, they simply have to tap the photo and will go through to the Spotify app where they can listen to the song, artist or playlist. Now it’s time that everyone tastes the Material Design for Messenger.

The brand new design will bring in the Material Design philosophy, and it will also let the Messenger team to implement new features faster down the road.

Aside from those changes, it would be noticeable that instead of a blue bottom bar separating buttons for composing new chats, making phone calls and search; now it’s replace with a new floating action button that appears on the bottom right of the screen.

Facebook Messenger Lead David Marcus announced on Twitter that the update should begin rolling out to Android users starting today, so be on the lookout for an update headed to the Play Store.
