Whiskey Tango Foxtrot has opened with a shy $7.6 million. Although Tina Fey isn’t that huge of a box office draw, the film does present her lowest opening weekend since The Invention of Lying ($7.02 million) back in 2009.
Zootopia, a family film took in another $63.4 million this weekend including $24 million in China, the biggest opening ever for a Disney Animation or Pixar release putting its foreign total at $158.8 million and worldwide total at $232.5 million. The Merc with a Mouth Deadpool still retains a place in the top five box office list with $16 million.
Zootopia stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman as an anthropomorphic bunny and fox, respectively, who are forced to work together despite their predator-prey dynamics.
In a report published on March 4, MKM Partners’ Eric Handler had mentioned that “Zootopia’s” weekend revenue would likely exceed $60 million.
The #4 March opening of any film, only behind The Hunger Games ($152.5 million), Alice in Wonderland ($116.1 million) and Oz The Great and Powerful ($79.1 million).
Kung Fu Panda 3 remains as solid as ever, an estimated $3.5 million making it mild success (if worldwide gross is counted), while The Revenant and its estimated $3.3 million continue to make the Oscar victor a verifiable worldwide success.
The audience for “Zootopia” skewed towards female moviegoers which is up to 53 percent and towards moviegoers 25 years and younger which is up to 54 percent.
“Deadpool” captured third place with $21.2 million.
“Zootopia”, an animated comedy about a rabbit that wants to be a cop, is shaping up to be a monster global hit.
