On day celebrating women, reminder of lingering gender gap

Although the day celebrates women’s economic, social, political and cultural achievements, it also seeks to draw attention to recognizing the potential women offer to economies worldwide..

This is why IWD is calling for a Pledge For Parity to make a concrete step to help achieve gender equality in terms of pay.

“The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights”, says world-renowned feminist, journalist and social and political activist Gloria Steinem. The CWP works towards increasing women’s representation in Parliament and the mainstreaming of gender considerations in legislative and policy decisions. International Women’s Day means we can remind ourselves that, not only women but both women and men together build the blocks of prosperity and living a better life means giving independence and liberty to all of us. “We are pleased that so many of our male counterparts in the New Zealand Parliament are pledging for parity to improve the lives of women and our country”, the Co-Chairpersons said. With the Agricultural Revolution I am championing and the #BackToFarm project which has already commenced in my constituency, women will be financially independent by the time the revolution hits all parts of the nation.

The research also revealed that gross annual earnings for women grew 1.4% between 2014 and 2015, compared with 1.6% for men.

– Meanwhile just 30 per cent of women and 39 per cent of men said their organisation has formal gender diversity policies and practices in place.

It’s a call out for the citizens and governments of the world to mobilise to progress the agenda on women’s rights and gender equality.

Despite the fact that it creates 80 per cent of jobs in the country, women are still designated to the menial jobs in the farm, yet they earn only a fraction of the income generated with a nominal percentage of the assets. Far too many women and girls continue to face injustices and discrimination.
