Militants Attack Tunisia Military Barracks, 53 Killed
Libya’s chaos, five years after the uprising that led to the ouster and killing of longtime autocrat Moammar Gadhafi in 2011, has allowed the Islamic State group to take control of several cities.

Tunisian forces killed 21 jihadists who attacked police and army posts near the Libyan border on Monday in a new spillover of violence that also saw four civilians killed.
“The objective of the attack was to disrupt the security situation in our country and establish a Daesh emirate in Ben Guerdane”, he said, using an Arabic acronym for IS.
Essid said Tunisian security forces had achieved “positive results”, noting that Tunisia estimates that 35 attackers are among the 53 dead. Officials say many were Tunisian fighters.
Corpses are lying in the street and extremist gunmen are hiding in homes in the Tunisian town of Ben Guerdane as security forces try to flush them out, according to witnesses.
Another witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of repercussions from the attackers, said the gunmen spoke of creating a caliphate and “liberating” the town. Hospital and security sources said at least seven civilians were killed along with 11 soldiers.
The interior and defence ministries said in a statement on Monday that the Tunisian government has closed its two border crossings with Libya because of the attack.
In response, Tunisia has completed a 125-mile water-filled trench along its Libyan border and invited in Western military advisers in an attempt to prevent further incursions.
U.S. commanders say such strikes are part of an effort to contain the spread of the Islamic State, while the United States and its allies consider a much wider campaign of airstrikes against the group in Libya.
Islamic State fighters are now estimated to number between 2,000 and 5,000 in several different cells across Libya.
Tunisian security forces Tuesday combed the area of Ben Guerdane, near Libya, theater Monday unprecedented of terrorist attacks, said Tuesday the Interior Ministry.
In an interview with Tunisian radio station Shems FM, a resident of Ben Guerdane said that moments before the attack, an unfamiliar voice took over the local mosque’s call to prayer.
In March 2015, gunmen killed 22 people at the National Bardo Museum, a popular destination for visitors in Tunis.

Troops also later discovered a large cache of rifles, explosives and rocket-propelled grenades in Ben Guerdan, a security source said. Residents were being urged to stay indoors even before the start of the night-time curfew.
