PREMIER LEAGUE RUMOURS: Rafael Benitez is Newcastle favourite to replace Steve McClaren

Newcastle United have so far resisted calls to sack head coach Steve McClaren but it is likely to have been only a temporary stay of execution after he was summoned to a meeting yesterday.

McClaren is facing the axe following a catastrophic run of results that has left Newcastle second from bottom of the Premier League and facing the growing possibility of relegation.

David Moyes, Nigel Pearson, Rafa Benitez and Harry Redknapp have all been linked with the club.

Former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez could also be in contention for the position at St James’ Park. We have kept one clean sheet since 6th December 2015.

With McClaren not even being invited to discuss his own future, things seem bleak for the manager.

The fans are decidedly unhappy with McClaren’s management since he took on the role last summer, with more and more people calling for him to be sacked and for a replacement to be found as soon as possible. That should focus minds as the powers-that-be ponder leaving Steve McClaren in charge.

5 Defeats in Newcastle’s last six Premier League matches.

“Whilst we have 10 games to go, fans can not accept the current work ethic of the players”.

McClaren is thought to have waited for news of his fate at his home on Teesside on Monday while his players had a day off before preparations for their trip to play league leaders Leicester next Monday.

Meanwhile, an open letter to the club from the Fans Forum – which has 15 seats occupied by supporters representing different elements of Newcastle’s fanbase, and meets to put questions to club officials at various points during a season – was published.

Hall, who was in charge when Newcastle nearly became English champions under Kevin Keegan in the 1990s, said: “I’m like every fan, I’m utterly depressed that we’re in a relegation battle again”. That has been key for us – playing at home.

Asked on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast whether the club should make a managerial change, he said: “No”. “I don’t care who the manager is, but the club will get out of this”.

Many may think that it’s too late to save us from the drop and that a losing mentality and trend is firmly rooted in everything NUFC related anyhow.
