Canadians and Americans have long held their own versions of the treacly liquid as superior. “These are two leaders who have very similar goals and philosophies”. He says the two governments “share and are working on the exact same objectives”.

Supporters of the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC), which was headed by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, are much less anxious about the consequences of climate change, as are Republicans in the U.S. Meanwhile, followers of Trudeau’s Liberal Party in Canada and members of the New Democratic Party (a social-democratic party led by Tom Mulcair), are more concerned about climate change, much like political independents and Democrats in the U.S.

The prime minister and his wife, Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau are being welcomed in front of the White House by President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle.

“Where’s the Stanley Cup right now?”

Trudeau points out that some of the top players on the team come from Canada.

Trudeau says it’s clear that the friendship and relationship between the USA and Canada will remain strong after the election and beyond that. Obama said, playing up the Canadian colloquialism.

Canada is the United States’ largest trading partner, with more than $2 billion worth of goods and services crossing the border every day.

The rule could have enormous implications: Not only is methane – a key component of natural gas – over 20 times more potent at warming the planet than carbon dioxide, but a new rule for existing sources could apply to the hundreds of thousands of wells that sprouted across the US amid the nation’s oil and gas renaissance, not to mention tens of thousands of miles of pipelines.

Besides trade, the two leaders were expected to seek common ground on environment protection. They committed to reducing methane emissions by 40 percent to 45 percent from 2012 levels over the coming decade.

Trudeau’s father swept into power in 1968 and, with a short interruption, served until 1984.
