McAuliffe to veto funding bill aimed at Planned Parenthood

Since taking office in 2011, Brownback has repeatedly signed annual budgets with a provision blocking Planned Parenthood from receiving federal funds for providing non-abortion, family planning services under another federal program, costing it about $370,000 a year.

Terry McAuliffe (D) has already pledged to veto the bill, which passed the Senate 21 to 19.

The legislation mirrors bills that have been passed in other states – such as Texas and MS – but have been challenged in court by Planned Parenthood. It requires doctors who perform abortions to have hospital admitting privileges, or that the clinic have a patient transfer agreement.

“It is not a bill that restricts a woman’s right to choose …”

At press time, Scott had yet to comment on whether he will sign the legislation. “It’s getting the same level of care that she would have if she walked into any other clinic”, she said.

“In reality, by making that choice of ending my second pregnancy, I was able to give my life completely to my daughter and devote myself to making our lives better”, she said.

“I’ve been surprised that we haven’t seen it yet”, said Sen.

Supporters of the bill say these are all services that several community low-priced clinics will now receive more funds for.

Florida is among many states adopting new abortion laws as conservatives seek to chip away at the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision to legalize abortion. As for a two-month delay, she said: “That’s not how it’s played out in other states”. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla, calling abortion “genocide”.

Planned Parenthood says it did nothing wrong, and U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups abused his discretion when he allowed the governor’s decision to stand.

Opponents question that. Karen Harris, chairman of the Florida chapter of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which opposes the bill, cited an Immokalee Planned Parenthood clinic likely to close under the law.

There are well over 140 federally qualified and rural clinics in Virginia that offer real, comprehensive health services women need, beyond the limited services offered at Virginia’s abortion centers.

Democratic Sen. Arthenia Joyner told the AP that the bill is part of a “witch hunt” against Planned Parenthood.

“It is not about protecting life”, she said.

He ordered state agencies to stop distributing federal money for sexually transmitted disease programs and sex education last fall, saying he was offended by the callousness of the discussion shown on the videos. “What it is, is the latest attack on a woman’s right, a woman’s freedom to control her own destiny and make up her mind about her own body without government officials telling her what to do”.
