Saints sign tight end Coby Fleener to 5-year contract

Fleener will give the Saints and Drew Brees the security blanket he covets down the middle of the field and in the red zone, and should be a high priority player for all of us fantasy football guys. “He creates, I think, such a tough match-up problem [for defenses]”. However, when the team traded Grubbs to Kansas City past year, Lelito emerged as the favorite to step into a starting role, a job he ultimately won. Fleener stayed with the team until 2015 while Luck is still expected to start off next season as the Colts’ quarterback.

He comes from a Colts team that wasn’t necessarily known for targeting tight ends.

Fleener, 27, spent four years in Indianapolis establishing himself as a sure-handed durable receiver who might be entering the prime years of his career. That season, Fleener caught 51 passes for 774 yards and eight TDs.

However, 12-year veteran Ben Watson had a career year, finishing with 74 catches for 825 yards and six touchdowns. He stayed with the team until 2009 then transferred to the Cleveland Browns in 2010. He also scored a touchdown.

The Saints should still have about $4-5 million in cap space after Wednesday’s moves, which also included re-signing kicker Kai Forbath and offering restricted-free-agent tenders to guard Tim Lelito and tight end Josh Hill. Details of the deal, however, are still unclear and it is not yet confirmed if both parties have already signed a contract.
