Newcastle offer Rafa Benitez manager’s job until the end of the season
Steve McClaren remains on the brink of the sack at Newcastle United with reports this afternoon suggesting he could depart the North East club as soon as today.

McClaren is back at Newcastle’s training ground and is taking a session with the squad this morning while he awaits clarification on his own future.
McClaren has been left in limbo over his position at Newcastle.
Newcastle face leaders Leicester City on Monday evening before the Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland and a trip to face survival rivals Norwich City a fortnight later.
There was no comment from the club on that, although sources on Tyneside were insistent that talk of a scheduled meeting between McClaren and managing director Lee Charnley later in the day were wide of the mark.
The Magpies are now in the relegation zone, one point from safety and, despite having a game in hand, are in serious danger of kicking off next season in the Championship.
Benitez is now considering the proposal, which includes a massive bonus and a long-term deal if he keeps Newcastle up.
The former Liverpool boss, out of work since being sacked by Real Madrid, will be given powers McClaren and predecessors Alan Pardew and John Carver could only dream about during their spells at St James’ Park.

Sky Sports television reported the club were in “advanced talks” with Spaniard Benitez about succeeding the former England boss on a three-year deal.
