A well-known pro-gun activist has been shot in the back by her four-year-old son after he found her.45-caliber pistol on the floor of her pickup truck.
She is undergoing treatment in a hospital and her condition is said to be stable.
Putnam County Sheriff’s investigators were trying on Thursday to determine how the boy got his hands on the gun they say he used to shoot his mother.
It is a misdemeanor in Florida to keep or misplace a firearm where a child can have easy access. The police also notified the Florida Department of Children and Family Services and continue to investigate exactly how the boy was able to get ahold of the gun and also if criminal charges are warranted.
Police report the four-year-old was sitting in a booster chair in the back seat, and somehow managed to pick up a loaded.
The Facebook page belongs to a person with the same name, Jamie Gilt, from the Jacksonville area.
‘The deputy ran to the vehicle and quickly determined that the driver had been shot’.
‘The deputy provided first aid until the arrival of paramedics.
Ironically, just a day before the accident, Gilt bragged on social media about her son’s shooting skills, according to New York Daily News. “My son gets jacked up to target shoot”, she wrote. The victim was transported to University of Florida Health in Gainesville and was last reported to be in stable condition’.
Many other posts are critical of gun control.
According to The Florida Times-Union, the case has gained attention because a Facebook page that belongs to a Jamie Gilt of Jacksonville has multiple posts supporting gun rights.
