Ex-first lady Nancy Reagan dies

“It was the most passionate love affair I think I’ve ever read about, in terms of a president and a first lady”, Goodwin told WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Carl Stevens. The former first lady has died at 94, The Associated Press confirmed Sunday, March 6, 2016.

“Mrs. Reagan was fiercely loyal to her beloved husband, and that devotion was matched only by her devotion to our country”, said former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura.

“I think they had a little bit of an edgy relationship really because dad was a real independent Texan and he was part of the grass-roots campaign because Reagan was really a political outsider”, Gabriel said.

This would later lead to perhaps Reagan’s most famous catch phrase “Just Say No”, which became an all-encompassing anti-drug campaign in the 1980s during her husband’s presidency.

She did so much to raise the profile of first lady and American fashion that she received a CFDA lifetime achievement award in 1989. “She was influential in his decision-making when he was governor, when he was president, and certainly in the days after he left office”.

Revered in Republican politics, Reagan was known as a fierce protector of her husband, both personally and politically.

The New York City native had been living in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles for the last few years as her health deteriorated. Her funeral will be closed to the public.

“Mrs. Reagan will lie in repose at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Wednesday, March 9 from 1 p.m.to 7 p.m. and also on Thursday, March 10 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m”.

Nancy Reagan lived a long and rich life.

The couple shared 52 attractive years of marriage together before Ronald died in 2004, losing his battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

In fact, Ivy Cohen, the former head of the Just Say No Foundation, said Mrs. Reagan galvanized attention on the drug issue.

“I got invited down to a magnificent luncheon and got to spend a lot of time with Nancy Reagan as well as the president”, he said.

But in that time, she became America’s role model for love and caring.
