“Climate change “is the most urgent threat facing our entire species”.

DiCaprio, 41, earned his first Oscar nomination in 1994 for his supporting role as a mentally challenged boy in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”.

A longtime environmental activist, DiCaprio founded his namesake foundation in 1998 with the goal of protecting wildlife, restoring threatened ecosystems, and advocating on behalf of the planet. The actor was recognized at the World Economic Forum with a Crystal Award for his achievements as an artist who shows commitment to improve the world’s condition, said Variety.

DiCaprio was not alone in his Oscars call to action against climate change. But the “Inception” star chose to spoke about an issue concerning people and he had the integrity and courage it takes to criticize the big corporate leaders and politicians who support their greed.

“Though clearly we don’t take full credit for the decline, certainly one would have to assume we were effective and part of the decline”, he said.

Leonardo DiCaprio took home his very first Oscar on Sunday night. In the movie, DiCaprio powerfully plays a revenge-seeking fur trapper who was attacked by a bear and left to die by his men. He walked approximately 20 miles to find the people who left him.

This year, things are going to be a little different at the Oscars.

During the beginning of his speech, DiCaprio mentioned, among other topics, the film in which he appeared and his director, Alejandro G. Iñárritu. “Making The Revenant was about man’s relationship to the natural world”, the environmental activist told the crowd, using the opportunity to discuss climate change.
