Puerto Rico reports 201 confirmed Zika cases
It’s setting up a monitoring system for any sign of the virus and has advised pregnant women to avoid travelling to countries with a high incidence of the virus.

Health officials say the man is doing well and is expected to fully recover from the illness.
While the Zika virus isn’t yet much of a threat in OH, the primary mosquito that transmits Zika is found in the tropics and southern U.S.
Frieden said Puerto Rico’s government has worked hard and responded well ever since the first Zika case was reported in December, but he noted that many challenges await.
Arkoosh said that women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should consult with a medical professional before traveling to areas where the virus has been found, as there have been cases of birth defects and other complications in pregnant women who have been infected.
“I urge everyone who is considering travel to a country with Zika transmission to be aware of the situation and take precautions to protect themselves and prevent mosquito bites”. Pregnant women should consider postponing travel to areas where Zika virus transmission is ongoing. In fact, 80% of people with Zika infections display no symptoms, according to the CDC.
With the amount of global travel West Virginians take part it, the state’s chief health officer anticipated the Zika virus could impact more people after the first case in the state was reported Thursday. But the unexpected numbers of birth defects in Zika outbreak areas of Brazil have raised alarms. A phase 1 trial evaluating the safety and immunogenicity of a vaccine candidate is slated for the end of the summer or early fall, with results expected to be released in early 2017, Fauci said. Sexual transmission is also possible, and CDC recommends travelers read information available at CDC’s Zika website and speak with a health care provider before traveling to affected areas.
So far an increase in microcephaly and other neonatal malformations has only been reported in Brazil and French Polynesia, although two cases linked to a stay in Brazil were detected in the United States of America and Slovenia. Common symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes.

“These findings support revising the Zika travel notice to reflect enhanced geographic precision regarding the likelihood of Zika virus presence at certain elevations”, the authors of the report note.
