“Zootopia” tripled the business of its closest competitor, “London Has Fallen”, which opened in second place with $21.6 million, according to comScore. Finally, The Witch ends its third week (and potential time on the top ten list) earning an estimated $2.5 million, $20.9 million in domestic totals, and that rarest of awards, an early year horror release with critical acclaim.

Trailing well behind in second place at the weekend box office was “London Has Fallen”, the sequel to 2013’s “Olympus Has Fallen”.

Compared to the most recent film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Zootopia” opened an impressive 31 percent ahead of the 56.2 million dollars start of 2014’s “Big Hero 6 ” “. The animated film notched an additional $63.4 million over the weekend, with $24 million of it coming from Chinese theaters alone. The film has also become the fourth biggest debut for a film in March, behind Oz the Great and Powerful ($79.11 million), Alice in Wonderland ($116.10 million), and The Hunger Games ($152.53 million). Combined with the $158.8 million earned overseas over the last four weeks, “Zootopia” already has $232.5 million in the bank.

Up from tenth to eight is The Revenant with a weekend gross of $3.4 million. The comic-book movie is within striking distance of “The Matrix Reloaded’s” $742.1 million global haul and should surpass it as the highest-grossing R-rated movie on a worldwide basis. Kung Fu Panda 3″, $3.5 million ($3.1 million international). 8″. A better question is who thought it was okay to release two Gerard Butler movies in back-to-back weekends? That does, however, trail the first film’s $30 million debut. The Tom McCarthy film is still the second lowest grossing Best Picture victor ever behind last year’s victor, “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”, which both star Michael Keaton.
